Neolithic stone sculpture from before about 5000 years showing the human form was discovered during excavations at one of the islands of Orkney in Scotland - gives the BBC News website.
The discovery was made on a neolithic Links of Noltland position on the island of Westray, the sixth largest island of Orkney in northern Scotland.
During excavations conducted under the direction of Richard Strachan, Jakob Kainz archaeologist has discovered a small figurine before about 5000 years made of sandstone, depicting a human figure with a marked parts of the face. This finding is the first Neolithic stone statue depicting a man found in Scotland. Two figures of this type were found earlier in other parts of the UK. Figure is flat, has a round head placed on the body shown in the diamond-shaped and clearly marked parts of a human face: forehead, eyes and nose, and engraved at the top of the head lines may represent hair. Breast figurines have been placed symmetrically two wheels, which can symbolize a woman's breasts, the sides of the body were marked hands. Figures on the reverse side is a regular pattern of intersecting lines, which - according to experts - may represent the fabric of women's clothes. According to archaeologists, finding no - despite the small size - the extraordinary importance because it is the oldest representation of the human face, yet rediscovered in Scotland.
