The team of archaeologists announced the discovery of traces of the last battle the defenders of the ancient Mayan city of El Mirador in Guatemala with the invaders from Mexico - reports the Independent Online website.
El Mirador was a great ancient Mayan city, built around 850 BC, located in present-day northern Guatemala, in the department of El Peten in the depths of the tropical forest in the distance of 8 kilometers from the border with Mexico. A team of researchers discovered the Tiger on top of the Pyramids - one of the three largest buildings in the city - hundreds of arrowheads and spear shot and fragments of human bones and broken crockery. Many of the blades have been found made of obsidian - volcanic glaze types - from several hundred kilometers distant central Mexico. According to the researchers, found the edge belong to the warriors of Teotihuacan, an ancient civilization which developed in the vicinity of present-day Mexico City. Findings may be remnants of a bloody battle, which took place between the last defenders of El Mirador and the invaders from Teotihuacan, possibly allied with Tikal Mayan living - far smaller town about 60 kilometers, and hostile to El Mirador.
El Mirador has reached the peak of its development during the third century BC - I century AD, when the count of more than 100 thousand inhabitants. In the mid-second century n.e. the city was abandoned for several centuries, and during the period July-ninth century, re-populated by the smaller population, and eventually deserted. According to Dr. R. Hansen, Pyramid of the Tiger was the last point of defense of the approximately 200 residents and members of the royal family's El Mirador, which remained in the desolate city and tried to resist the invaders.
